introduction

This year's nottdance focuses on work with an intrinsic sense of place. The influences of landscape, belonging, location and dislocation are all explored through performance, installation and outdoor work. Elements as diverse as light labyrinths, motivational speakers, new born babies, private dancers and Grimm fairy tales all provide extraordinary dance experiences drawn from the progressive edge of international performance.

Transatlantic visitors include a strong US contingent: Deborah Hay Company, Goat Island, and newcomers MK Guth and Andrew Dickson. British choreographers and dancers bring brand new work to nottdance, including a work in progress by Wendy Houstoun and a new children's show from Sean Tuan John with Belgian choreographer Bert van Gorp. Two installations invite contrasting private and public interaction: the individual experience of Rosemary Lee & Nic Sandiland's Remote Dancing, and the compelling outdoor light projections by land artist Jim Buchanan. And last but no by no means least, Jérôme Bel returns to his "UK home" with the very first piece of work he made.

'A CELEBRATORY RE-EXAMINATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DANCE WORLD AND THE REAL WORLD… A FESTIVAL WITH A DIFFERENCE.'
