U.Dance East Midlands

Over 700 people ventured out this Mother’s Day to see more than 200 local and regional youth dancers perform at the Curve theatre in Leicester. Dance4, the international dance centre in Nottingham, presented the event for the first time this year to a rapturous audience who enjoyed the performances onstage and off-stage in a festival atmosphere.
*U.Dance National Performance Framework

The event – U.Dance East Midlands has been developed as an opportunity for the best regional youth dancers aged 11-19 years, to showcase their talents in a professional venue. One dance group from this event will be selected to represent the region at a national event in July this year.

Programme highlights included a slick street dance performance by Leicester based collective ‘Addict’ and ballet by ‘Elevate’ from Leicester-shire Arts in Education Youth Ballet, who performed alongside hip hop theatre and beatboxers ‘Fresh 101 Crew’ from Lincolnshire and the contemporary dance group ‘Retina’ from Nottingham.

The event was opened by prominent choreographer Wayne McGregor, who is also the government’s first youth dance minister. Vanessa McGuire, Youth Dance Strategy Manager at Dance4 said, “The event was a huge success and an excellent regional focus for youth dance.  We were very impressed by the calibre of all the dancers and selecting one group to put forward to the national platform is proving very difficult.”
